Creating a Period Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of an old home, too, and plenty of suppliers can help create, or re-create, a period-style room.

The term "period kitchen" is misleading because no one today wants to live with a real period kitchen, with its wood-burning stove and lack of modern electrical appliances. What most people want, instead, is a kitchen with the warm, inviting appeal of traditional design, a layout that creates the look and feel of a period kitchen -- but one that also has all the modern conveniences.

To meet the growing demand for period-looking kitchens, a wide array of products is now available, including glass-fronted cabinets, tin ceilings, period moldings and other fittings and accessories that add charm and character. Some of the reproduction materials are excellent, well designed and well crafted. Others are, frankly, junk. The list below provides a good cross-section of the market for high-quality period kitchen products.
