The Bird Cage: Renovation Project
The Milwaukee County War Memorial is a mid-century modern building by Eero Saarinen, built in 1955. Saarinen was a world renowned architect and designed many famous buildings including the "Bird Cage" staircase. The "Bird Cage" staircase is a double cantilever stair, cantilevered over the reflecting pool and the eternal flame. It is enclosed by a closely spaced steal and glass curtain wall, making it quite an architectural statement.
HGA Architects was hired by Milwaukee County to do a curtain wall replacement. As the damage to the structure was observed, it was found that it really was not as bad as what it appeared to be. Much of the damage was superficial, so this project was then explored as a restoration option instead of a replacement option. One of the big factors that had to be addressed was replacing the glass with something that was insulated. However, it couldn't weigh more than the quarter-inch glass that was in place.
In the video below, learn how the use of Pilkington Spacia™ Vacuum insulated glazing perfectly met the needs for the "Bird Cage" staircase renovation.
