“The Paddock House” on Cape Cod by SLC Interiors has Award-Winning Interior Design
The Paddock House in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, has a long and rich history that is highlighted and reflected by its recently completed interiors by SLC Interiors, which bridge timelines. The saltbox house, which was recently restored, dates to the 1660s and was reimagined, in a traditional style, for a 21st-century family. SLC Interiors took home a 2024 Bulfinch Award by the ICAA New England in the interior design category for the project.
The transformation starts in the entry hall, a new space with a central staircase that was created in the void left by the central chimney. The stair hall was clad in boards showing the original lath and plaster marks that were reclaimed from the exterior walls. The repurposing of materials creates a graphic pattern that celebrates the history of the home in a thoughtful way.
The new-old theme continues in the first-floor sitting room that features wainscoting modeled after paneling unearthed during the renovation and furniture that is a mix of Colonial-style case- good pieces with more refined English-style seating.
In the central breakfast and game room, new supports were created from antique heart pine grade beams in the cellar. As in many Colonial homes, this room hosts multiple functions with moveable furniture, including ladder-back chairs, pedestal-style tables, and painted case goods. The kitchen’s humble roots are portrayed with painted, distressed cabinets and open shelving, iron hardware, and a Shaker-style chandelier.
To open up the second-floor bedroom, the attic floor was removed, revealing the patinaed joinery, and the room was furnished with an eclectic mix of Early American–style pieces, including a Sheraton-style bed and an early-American-style bedside table. The hand-hooked area rug and quilted bedding are a nod to traditional, Colonial-era crafts.
The upper-floor family room also showcases the historic bones of the house by making the joinery of the post-and-beam structure visible. Rustic-style seating with rush seats and painted case goods accented with linens and block-print fabrics complete the inviting scene. Table and floor lamps provide most of the light, while small accent and cove lighting supplement the overall illumination and highlight the beauty of construction and time-worn materials.
