This custom gambrel house in Concord, Massachusetts, by Mellowes & Paladino Architects won one of this year's ICAA New England Bulfinch Awards. The new construction is under 5,000 square feet, and, in the New England style, has a traditional exterior and transitional light-filled interiors that overlook the neighboring horse farm.

The first floor, in an open-concept layout with double islands in the kitchen, expands living and dining areas into one great space. Bay windows—one appointed with a piano, the other with a breakfast nook—reinforce the symmetry of the façade by flanking the front entrance, and windows along the rear of the house frame bucolic views of the garden and larger landscape. Millwork details throughout contribute to the overall classic style.

Prime features include a covered front portico with a custom balustrade above; a secondary entrance with a covered porch adjacent to the garage; a living room floor-to-ceiling bay window and French doors to a stone terrace; a first-floor library with a full bath; a custom butler’s pantry with built-in cabinetry; a Dutch door leading to the covered rear portico; a primary suite above the great room that has a luxurious bath; built-in dog doors that slide into the wall; a half bath and large closet in the illuminated hallway leading to the garage; two additional bedrooms on the second floor; and back stairs that lead to the golf simulator room above the garage.
